My name is Emily and I am an asthma mom to Karabo! He is 5 years old and has dealt with asthma most of his life. From a few weeks old, his respiratory rate was always faster than normal. At 5 months old, he was hospitalized in the ICU for 12 days with RSV. Six months later, we realized this was more than just recovering from RSV and they started treating his symptoms as asthma. From age 1 to 3 his asthma got increasingly worse and it got to a point that he needed multiple albuterol treatments every day and every runny nose turned into pneumonia. We finally found a pulmonologist who switched his medications, did testing and went in to look at and flush his airways. After that, we kept him home for 6 months because his lungs were so weak. It was at that point that she felt confident in diagnosing him with severe persistent asthma. At age 5, we are finally at a place where we feel comfortable and confident with controlling and treating his asthma. Although even a common cold can turn into a severe sickness for him, he lives his life like a normal kid and knows what to do if he has an asthma attack.

Madison is a single mama to a seven-year-old little, redheaded boy named Carson. Carson was born at 33 weeks gestation and was in the NICU for two and a half weeks. He came home for two weeks and then was put back into our local children’s hospital (Lebonheur) for RSV at just a month old. This is when they found out that Carson had asthma. From then on, Carson spent the whole first two years of his life in and out of LeBonheur Children’s Hospital. Something so small (like a cold) could put him into distress and cause an asthma attack. Carson regularly sees a pulmonologist and is on two inhalers a day (steroid and albuterol). He is seven now and his mom can confidently say that they have his asthma under control. They have even tried to wean him off the steroid that he’s been on for his lungs (work in progress). He lives life like a normal kid and is aware of all the signs and symptoms and knows when he is experiencing them.

Katie Rankin is a girl mom of three in Kentucky! Her oldest daughter, 7, has dealt with asthma since she was a toddler.
